Super Yooka-Laylee Kart Announced: Playtonic Reveals SNES-Style Racer With Advanced Mechanics and Deep Story Mode

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart Announced: Playtonic Reveals SNES-Style Racer With Advanced Mechanics and Deep Story Mode

June 7, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart has been officially revealed by Playtonic Games, marking the return of Yooka and Laylee in a Mode 7-inspired, SNES-style kart racer for PC, with features including an extensive story campaign, new ‘Rage’ mechanics, and competitive online and local multiplayer for up to eight players.

Playtonic Games has confirmed that Super Yooka-Laylee Kart is in active development, following weeks of leaks and speculation. It’s the first entirely new release for the lizard-and-bat duo since their 2017 platforming debut and arrives after 2025’s Yooka-Laylee remake. The announcement was accompanied by an official trailer aired during Summer Game Fest’s Day of the Devs showcase. While ‘Super Yooka-Laylee Kart’ currently lists only a PC (Steam) release, Playtonic has stated that more platform details will be announced in the future.

Retro Aesthetics and New Gameplay Systems

The kart racer draws direct inspiration from classic SNES racing titles, utilising a visual style reminiscent of the Super Nintendo’s Mode 7 graphics engine, best known from the original ‘Super Mario Kart.’ Tracks are rendered as flat, top-down planes rotating beneath sprite-based characters, with 2D scenery scrolling past. ‘Super Yooka-Laylee Kart sees Playtonic Games’ best-buddy mascots following in the tyre tracks of the many other video game platform heroes (from Mario to Sonic to Crash Bandicoot) who’ve donned helmets and gone four-wheeled over the decades,’ reports Eurogamer.

Unlike typical retro racers, Playtonic is targeting ‘advanced techniques, expressive gameplay, tactical weapons, and high-skill competition,’ promising a thoroughly modern experience with strategic depth. The ‘Rage system,’ an all-new mechanic, ‘builds throughout a race as positions shift and rivals attack, enabling players to unleash ‘devastating’ revenge abilities and create comeback opportunities.’

  • Visual Style: Inspired by SNES Mode 7, with fully 2D sprites and flat, spinning tracks
  • Rage System: Lets players charge up abilities by engaging in rivalries and shifting race positions
  • Coins and Perks: Players collect coins in races and can spend them between events to gain perks, choosing between maintaining top speed now or betting on late-race advantages
  • Player Modes: Supports 1–8 players in both local split-screen and online multiplayer, with leaderboards, time trials, and lobbies for custom race rules

Story Campaign, Multiplayer Features, and Development Team

Super Yooka-Laylee Kart features a comprehensive single-player story campaign with clear influences from Diddy Kong Racing—a project several of Playtonic’s team members helped develop during their tenure at Rare. According to Playtonic, the campaign is designed to be ‘deep’ and ‘replayable,’ comprising ‘tournaments, rival races, time trials, endurance events, and a ‘huge variety of skill-based challenges built to continually push players to improve’.’ This marks a departure from many genre peers by providing true narrative-driven content and extensive solo play as well as multiplayer modes.

Competitive play receives substantial support. Multiplayer modes cater to a broad audience, with options for both split-screen local play and online matchmaking supporting up to eight players per race. Eurogamer’s reporting highlights the inclusion of ‘dedicated time trials, leaderboards, and friend lobbies featuring ‘extensive’ race customisation, enabling players to create their own races, rivalries, and rules.’

  • Story Campaign: Deep, replayable, featuring tournaments, time trials, rival races, and endurance events
  • Multiplayer: Up to 8 players, split-screen or online, custom lobbies, race rule editing
  • Developer Team: Assembled from Playtonic Games, includes ex-Rare developers behind Diddy Kong Racing
  • Beta Testing: Playtonic has announced plans for multiple multiplayer beta tests before launch

At present, Playtonic has not announced an official release date or confirmed which platforms beyond Steam will receive the game. ‘Sadly, there’s no release date for Super Yooka-Laylee Kart yet – or even platforms for that matter, beyond Steam – but Playtonic says it’s planning to hold a number of multiplayer beta tests ahead of its launch,’ the announcement clarifies.
