Warren Spector retires from game development, but leaves the door open to return

Will I come back? Never say never.

By Ibraheem Adeola

Warren Spector says he is retiring from game development as he approaches his 44th year as a developer, although he has deliberately stopped short of calling the decision permanent.

In a public LinkedIn post, Spector wrote: “I’m retiring from game development. At least I think so.” He said he was a month away from his 44th year as a developer and cited age, health and changes in the business as factors in his decision.

Spector described game development as no longer being as enjoyable for him as it once was. His post also makes clear that he is retiring from game development, not withdrawing from all professional or creative work.

Is Warren Spector permanently retiring from games?

Not necessarily, according to Spector’s own wording. He said there are still three games he would like to make and acknowledged that he has changed his mind about retirement before. He then left open the possibility of returning, writing in the same LinkedIn statement: “Will I come back? Never say never.”

That makes this a retirement from game development as things stand, rather than confirmation that Spector will never work on another game. He did not announce a new project, provide a timetable for a possible return or identify the three game ideas he still wants to pursue. His personal decision should also be separated from speculation about the games and series associated with his career. The post does not announce a cancellation, delay, continuation or change concerning Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief or Epic Mickey. It is not a franchise announcement.

What will Warren Spector do next?

Spector said he plans to write books, spend more time reading, lecture and possibly consult. He also wants to return to playing piano. Those plans mean the announcement is not a retirement from public or creative life. However, he has not yet identified any specific books, lectures or consulting engagements.

Why Spector’s retirement matters

Spector’s career covers several influential studios and projects. Game Developer’s biography records his work at Origin and Looking Glass before his time at Ion Storm, where he directed Deus Ex. He later led development of Epic Mickey at Junction Point. That history explains the interest in his announcement, but its confirmed scope is narrow: Spector is retiring from game development for now while retaining the option to change his mind.

What does the announcement mean for System Shock 3?

Nothing new about System Shock 3 was announced in Spector’s retirement statement. Separate reporting from June 2026 provides context, but it predates and is not presented as a consequence of his August 18 announcement. In a June interview with Game Informer, Spector said that if anything were to happen with System Shock 3, it would be Tencent’s project rather than OtherSide Entertainment’s. Claims that the retirement announcement settles the future of System Shock 3, Deus Ex, Thief or Epic Mickey would therefore go beyond the available evidence. Spector’s message is a qualified farewell to game development, not a roadmap for the franchises associated with him.
