Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Records With 10 Million Sold, Outselling PS4 and PS5 Launches

Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Records With 10 Million Sold, Outselling PS4 and PS5 Launches

November 5, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Nintendo Switch 2 is rewriting the record books. By the end of September, the new console had moved 10.36 million units worldwide. That’s not just impressive, it’s the strongest console launch in gaming history, leaving the original Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in the dust at this stage.

To compare: the original Switch sold 4.7 million, PS4 hit 7.5 million, and PS5 managed 7.8 million in their first two quarters. The PS5’s early numbers were hampered by pandemic stock issues, but even then, Switch 2 is way ahead. Nintendo revealed the monster numbers in their latest financial results. The surprise? Even the company itself underestimated demand, and it’s now bumped up its expectations for the rest of the year.

Nintendo Raises Forecasts and Analysts See Room to Grow

Off the back of these numbers, Nintendo boosted its full-year hardware forecast to 19 million units, up from the already ambitious 15 million. Operating profit projections are also up 15 percent, reaching around $2.4 billion. These updated estimates include current US tariff rates, so it’s not just blue-sky optimism.

Since Switch 2 launched on June 5, the Americas have led sales at 3.68 million units (about 35 percent), while Japan has taken 22.6 percent with 2.35 million sales. Nintendo points out that sales in Japan could have been even higher if not for stock shortages.

If the Switch 2 hits its new 19 million goal in year one, it’ll be way ahead of the original Switch (14.87 million), PlayStation 4 (13.5 million), and PlayStation 5 (13.4 million) at the same point in their lives. One analyst put it plainly: “The biggest console launch ever.”

Analysts expect Nintendo won’t stop revising those forecasts upward. “Selling over 10 million units in just the first half of the fiscal year was a major surprise that far exceeded market expectations,” said Hideki Yasuda of Toyo Securities. He told Bloomberg that the Christmas season usually surpasses the first half, strengthening the case for another upward revision.

Dr Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, had even less patience for lowball estimates from rivals. “Wasn’t it always very clear that there is incredible pent-up demand for Switch 2?” he told VGC. Toto predicts year-end sales “around 20 million units,” calling Nintendo’s initial numbers “typical lowballing.” He expects the new Pokémon title to drive momentum all the way into 2026. His only caveat? A quarterly dip in digital sales compared to last year.

Software Hits Just as Hard as Hardware

It’s not just the console moving units. Nintendo’s entire gaming platform segment, including Switch Online, downloads, amiibo, and accessories, is up a staggering 119 percent from last year thanks to the Switch 2 and its higher price tag.

Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 launch flagship, racked up 4 million more in sales for a total of 9.57 million since release. That’s double the pace of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at a comparable point, making it the series’ strongest launch ever. The attach rate is wild too: 92 percent of Switch 2 buyers picked up Mario Kart World, with 8.1 million coming bundled with the hardware.

Donkey Kong Bananza, another July release, chalked up 3.49 million in sales, and Mario Party Jamboree: Switch 2 Edition managed 1.16 million units out of the gate.

The original Switch is finally starting to slow, with annual sales forecasts dropping by 500,000 to just 4 million this fiscal year. Still, it moved another 910,000 units in the last quarter, but that’s a steep 60 percent drop from this time last year. Lifetime sales for the console now sit at 154.01 million, nearly even with the Nintendo DS (154.02 million). Nintendo thinks it’ll squeeze out another 2 million by March, keeping it right behind the all-time champ, PlayStation 2 (160 million).

What’s Next? Fresh Games and Even More Momentum

If you think the Switch 2 surge slows down here, think again. Nintendo’s next report will include blockbuster launches like Pokémon Legends Z-A (already at 6 million copies sold in its first week), the Super Mario Galaxy remasters, and Kirby Air Riders (dropping this month), as well as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for December.

Short version: Switch 2 is smashing expectations, shattering records, and pulling the rest of the Nintendo ecosystem with it. If you thought the Switch era was winding down, the numbers say otherwise.
