MindsEye, Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and Bubsy Crash Into Metacritic’s Worst Games of 2025 So Far

MindsEye, Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and Bubsy Crash Into Metacritic’s Worst Games of 2025 So Far

November 17, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

MindsEye has crashed to the bottom of the barrel for 2025, seizing the title of year’s worst game on Metacritic. Even as the calendar wraps, a clear pattern has emerged: high-profile launches are no guarantee of high scores.

Developed by Build a Rocket Boy and steered by Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies, MindsEye launched to critical disaster. With a dismal Metascore of 37, it’s lower than nearly any other release in the past five years. Technical problems flooded player experiences at launch, spiraling so badly that PlayStation started refunding customers, a move reserved for only the most spectacular flops, like Cyberpunk 2077.

Review Aggregators Don’t Hold Back: The Worst of 2025 So Far

Every year Metacritic, the heavyweight review aggregator, corrals the opinions of the world’s most respected critics into a single, brutal consensus. As 2025 draws to its final weeks, the site’s bottom ten offers up a sobering look at who stumbled hardest this year.

The runner up to MindsEye’s ignominy: Tamagotchi Plaza, a Switch 2 exclusive from Bandai Namco, pulling in a 43 Metascore. Critics hammered Tamagotchi Plaza for its simplistic and repetitive gameplay; never a recipe for lasting praise, even with a nostalgia-heavy name.

Nintendo itself also finds a surprise spot on the wall of shame with Switch 2 Welcome Tour. Released as a $10 interactive experience, its Metascore of 54 cemented its place among 2025’s most panned games. Rounding out the bottom cluster is Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection, a Limited Run Games project that aimed to resurrect the infamous feline platformer but couldn’t convince critics to join its comeback tour. Bubsy’s collection landed a Metascore of 53, a number that speaks volumes given its already checkered legacy.

Surprise Flops and Near Misses

Just outside that dreadful bottom ten, Hotel Barcelona (Metascore 56), a horror team-up from cult icons Swery65 and Suda51, missed the mark for both fans and critics, despite the big names attached. Meanwhile on the VR front, Victory Beyond tried to ride the Star Wars license to success on Meta Quest, but limp reviews settled it at a 57 score.

Most of these disasters share a common theme: technical slip-ups and gameplay that just couldn’t hook either critics or fans. Refund policies getting triggered by review fallout is rare, but MindsEye proved it’s possible if you stumble hard enough out of the gate.

The full list of Metacritic’s worst reviewed games of 2025 so far:

  • MindsEye (PC) – 37
  • Tamagotchi Plaza (Switch 2) – 43
  • Ambulance Life: A Pandemic Simulator (PS5) – 44
  • Scar-Lead Salvation (PS5) – 44
  • Captain Blood (PC) – 50
  • Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos (PS5) – 51
  • Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact – 53
  • Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection (PS5) – 53
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour (Switch 2) – 54
  • Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition (PS5) – 55

The gulf between these bottom-tier games and 2025’s hits is starker than ever. For perspective, some of the top Metacritic scorers of 2025 include Hades 2, Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, and Blue Prince; titles lauded for polish, creativity, and execution.

Metacritic’s methodology has been consistent since its launch in 1999: only the most respected reviews feed into the site’s weighted scores. If a game’s sitting low on their scoreboard, it didn’t just get unlucky. It earned it, one way or another.
