GTA 6 boxed code regions: PS5, Xbox and Japan expiry explained

If you plan to import a boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto VI, check your PlayStation account country before buying it. The box contains a download code rather than a game disc. On PlayStation, that code must be compatible with the country or region linked to the account that redeems it. Xbox buyers face a different rule. Rockstar says GTA VI Xbox codes are not region-locked. Japanese PlayStation codes also carry a separate warning: they expire 170 days after the game launches on 19 November 2026.

GTA 6 boxed copies contain a code, not a disc

Rockstar calls this the physical version, but it is not a traditional disc release. Its GTA VI platforms and versions guide says the box contains a code for downloading the digital game. No disc is included. This makes the code’s region important when you import the game or buy it as a gift. On PlayStation, the country linked to the account matters more than the current location of the console or its owner. PlayStation Network is often shortened to PSN. In this guide, “PSN account country” means the country or region selected when that PlayStation account was created.

How GTA 6 boxed code regions work on PlayStation

Rockstar explains the main restriction this way:

“Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account.”

In practice, a PlayStation code bought in another country must belong to a Rockstar purchase group that includes your PSN account country. A mismatch could prevent you from redeeming the code on that account. This is not always a one-country lock. Rockstar combines some countries into larger groups. For example, its North America group covers accounts registered in Canada and the United States. Do not rely only on broad shop labels such as “European version” or “Asian version.” Ask which Rockstar purchase group the PlayStation code belongs to, then compare it with Rockstar’s official country list.

Which PlayStation purchase groups does Rockstar list?

Rockstar divides GTA VI PlayStation code redemption into the following purchase groups:

• Brazil
• LATAM, meaning Latin America
• North America, covering Canada and the United States
• Korea
• Japan
• United Kingdom
• Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates
• Rest of Asia
• Rest of EMEA and Asia, with EMEA meaning Europe, the Middle East and Africa

Some of those groups contain long country lists. Check your exact account country in Rockstar’s official lookup before placing an order. Do not assume that a nearby country or a shared currency puts two accounts in the same group.

You cannot change your PSN account country later

Check the country on the account that will redeem the code, not just where its owner currently lives. Sony’s PlayStation terms say an account’s country or region cannot be changed after the account is created. This distinction is especially important for gifts. A UK code may suit someone with a UK PSN account. It is not automatically suitable for someone living in the UK who uses an account registered in another country. Do not try to work around a mismatch by creating an account with false location details. Sony requires accurate account information. Buy a code that matches the existing account instead.

How to check an imported GTA 6 PS5 code

• Find the country or region linked to the PSN account that will redeem the code.
• Ask the seller which Rockstar PlayStation purchase group the code belongs to.
• Open Rockstar’s official list and confirm that the account country appears in that group.
• Read the seller’s refund policy before opening the box or revealing the code.
• If the region is unclear, buy through a store that officially serves the account’s country.

Rockstar’s separate GTA VI pre-order guide lists official stores and notes that availability varies by country. It also confirms that the boxed product contains a code and no disc.

GTA 6 Xbox codes are not region-locked

Rockstar gives a simpler answer for Xbox: “Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked.” The PlayStation account-country matching process described above therefore does not apply to GTA VI Xbox codes. You should still check that you are buying the Xbox version from a trustworthy seller. Rockstar’s statement addresses the code’s region restriction, not a retailer’s delivery, return or refund terms.

Japan warning: PlayStation codes expire after 170 days

Japanese PlayStation codes have an extra time limit. Rockstar states:

“Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations.”

This warning applies to product codes bought in Japan. Rockstar does not say the same 170-day limit applies elsewhere, so it should not be treated as a worldwide GTA VI expiry rule. Adding 170 days to 19 November 2026 gives an estimated expiry date of 8 May 2027. That is a calendar calculation based on Rockstar’s stated period, not a separate deadline published by Rockstar. The support page does not provide an exact expiry time. If you buy a Japanese PlayStation code, redeem it promptly. Avoid keeping it for a much later gift or console purchase, and retain the receipt and seller details.

When can boxed-code buyers pre-load GTA 6?

Rockstar says pre-loading starts at local midnight on 12 November 2026. It expects boxed copies to ship or become available for collection from that date. Buyers can then redeem the code and download the game before its 19 November launch. Check account compatibility before buying. Once the code arrives, redeem it on the matching account and begin the download when pre-loading opens.
