Id Software Slashed by Microsoft Restructuring, Over 70% Staff Cut and Standalone Future in Doubt

Id Software Slashed by Microsoft Restructuring, Over 70% Staff Cut and Standalone Future in Doubt

July 10, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Id Software, iconic studio behind Doom and Quake, has been hit by mass layoffs, with 136 of 185 staff let go during Microsoft’s Xbox restructuring, raising serious doubts about its future as a standalone developer and halting multiple new game concepts.

According to an official WARN notice filed in Texas and cited by Game Developer, Microsoft’s July 2026 Xbox restructuring resulted in 136 redundancies at id Software. Of these, 96 employees from the Texas office and 40 remote workers lost their jobs, leaving only 49 of the 185-strong December 2025 workforce. This equates to a loss of nearly 74% of studio personnel. The legal threshold for the WARN notice is 100 layoffs, a figure Microsoft significantly exceeded.

GamesBeat’s interviews with former staff confirm the abrupt scale of the cuts. One former employee told the outlet, “I was blindsided by it. The scale of it,” while former principal VFX artist Derek Best publicly stated on LinkedIn, “Collectively decades of knowledge was wiped out of the studio. Great job Microsoft. Nothing says business success like nuking a team into the dirt and relegating them to support studio size while also throwing out massive technological achievements.”

The cull happened as id Software was between major projects. Doom: The Dark Ages, released in 2025, marked the studio’s most successful launch to date. An expansion, Revelations, shipped only days before the layoffs. GamesBeat detailed that during the downsizing, id Software was still prototyping new titles, all now shelved or terminated due to the scale of the layoffs.

Cancelled Game Projects and Impacted Roles

Insider reporting reveals several ambitious prototypes that are no longer in active development:

  • Fury – A “John Wick-style” original IP blending sci-fi, noir, and US gangster motifs, set in cyberpunk Louisiana and Chicago, focusing on “Gun Fu” gameplay (gunplay + martial arts). Never formally greenlit.
  • Perfect Dark pitch – A proposal for the storied franchise, following the cancelled Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative reboot in 2025.
  • Ironwood – Inspired by Westworld, a survival-driven robot game concept.
  • DOOM multiplayer/co-op – An iteration of the studio’s flagship series, focused on multiplayer and co-operative mechanics.

GamesBeat notes, “No one appears to be working on Quake.”

Critical technical capabilities have also been lost. An unverified internal document, corroborated by multiple reports, suggests that most, if not all, senior engine and coding roles were eliminated. This is significant given id Software’s historic role as architect and steward of the id Tech engine, which powers franchises like Wolfenstein and the 2024 title Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

This raises questions about Microsoft’s future plans. Xbox head Asha Sharma has spoken about “streamlining tool use across the division and cutting ‘vendor spend’ in half,” specifically referring to reducing payments to third-party engine vendors such as Unreal. However, as the layoffs decimated id Tech development, and Unreal Engine 5 was licensed for the Halo 1 remake, the company’s core tech direction appears muddled. As one former VFX artist put it, id is now “relegated … to support studio size.”

Microsoft’s Xbox Division Restructuring and Broader Consequences

Microsoft’s wider restructuring plan will result in 3,200 job losses across Xbox, with 1,600 cuts immediate and another 1,600 staggered over the next year. Five major studios are expected to leave or change status during this process:

  • Double Fine and Compulsion Games are returning to independence,
  • Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are under new, undisclosed management,
  • Arkane is in active divestment negotiations.

The blow to id Software, however, is especially pronounced. Established as an industry-defining pioneer with Doom and Quake, the studio has now lost the capacity to develop major independent projects, likely shifting to a supporting role for MachineGames and other studios. Community leaders within games media, including John Romero, co-creator of both Doom and Quake, have shared public condolences with affected workers. Eurogamer observed, “Collectively decades of knowledge was wiped out,” echoing widespread dismay across the industry.

Key facts at a glance:

  • Total id Software layoffs (July 2026): 136 (96 on-site, 40 remote)
  • Staff remaining at id Software: 49 (from 185 in December 2025)
  • WARN legal notice threshold (US): 100 redundancies
  • Microsoft Xbox division total job losses: 3,200 over next year (1,600 immediate)
  • Major prototype projects cancelled: Fury, Perfect Dark pitch, Ironwood, co-op Doom
  • id Software’s future role: Support for other Xbox studios, particularly MachineGames
  • Doom: The Dark Ages (2025): Most successful launch in id Software history

With its workforce cut by three-quarters and proprietary engine responsibilities slashed, id Software’s ability to create full-scale original projects has all but disappeared under Microsoft’s new Xbox regime.
